Educational Aims

Chemistry is a discipline that teaches how to produce substances from their atomic and molecular levels, with the goal of contributing to the development, safety, and welfare of society. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry leads chemistry (material science) and bioscience to the next generation through the creation of new molecules and materials. We expect each student to acquire the skills and knowledge required to conduct research at an international level. The aim of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is to produce researchers and engineers who will pursue a wide range of research in chemistry (the material science) and bioscience.

Admission Policy

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry seeks students who have completed a bachelor's program in chemical engineering or a relevant field and who wish to be leading engineers in manufacturing industries, or researchers in applied chemistry and bioscience. Students who wish to study in the Graduate School are expected to have the following traits:

  • A desire to undertake applied research based on fundamental chemical knowledge
  • A positive attitude toward new fields of study
  • A steadfast ability to advance the pursuit of truth
  • A strong sense of engineering ethics

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is composed of a total of ten laboratories, including six laboratories that specialize in five main fields, three laboratories in one cooperative institute, and one other laboratories. These laboratories work in cooperation to conduct research and perform educational activities. Unlike the specialized departments found in most other institutions, we study a diverse range of subjects, from organic and inorganic chemistry to bio-molecules. Specific research topics include the design and study of novel functional organic materials; highly-functional ceramics; unconventional and highly-functional catalysts; advanced functional materials with electrical, optical and biomedical applications; molecular clusters with teamwork features at the nano-level; and nano-ultrathin membranes. These diverse projects are intertwined to cultivate a new science and technology based on molecular chemistry with the integration of organic and inorganic chemistry, soft matter and biomolecular chemistry.
