Department of Civil and Structural Engineering

Educational Aims

photo

The Department of Civil and Structural Engineering offers comprehensive education and research opportunities related to the advanced construction materials used in social infrastructure facilities, the design and maintenance of structural stability and durability, evaluation of soil strength, earth reinforcement and foundation strengthening techniques, the geosphere environment (both ground-surface and underground), and disaster prevention systems. Through these education and research opportunities, we aim to systematically nurture engineers, researchers, and educators who will build and maintain the future social infrastructure. To achieve this, the following programs are offered:

  • A high-level professional education with systemized instruction from foundation to application
  • Internships with affiliated industries, government offices, and academia, and a practical education in the use of the TA/RA system
  • An education with an international focus
  • An education that trains students to develop leadership and independent problem solving skills throughout the entire research process.

Admission Policy

The Department of Civil and Structural Engineering is the study of restructuring social infrastructure systems beyond the limits of traditional technologies for the deployment of advanced structural design and construction technologies, as well as for the development of improved natural disaster prevention through technology. We consider the following when admitting students to the program:

  • A basic background in a scientific field such as structural engineering, construction materials, or geotechnical engineering
  • Possession of the education and ethics needed to become an engineer or researcher
  • The motivation to actively pursue independent study
  • Possession of the language abilities needed to study in international society

The social mission of the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering is to find solutions to global environmental and disaster prevention issues. To this end, we aim to cultivate people who are responsible, ethical, and motivated toward leadership in building a secure and safe social infrastructure. The main education and research fields are for structural, earthquake, geotechnical and disaster prevention engineering. Specifically, we are seeking to train high-level professionals and researchers to be the following:

  • Professional engineers who are able to deal with a wide range of work in such areas as social infrastructure and disaster prevention (in government, public enterprise, private industry, construction, etc.)
  • Generalists who have a sense of responsibility and ethics, and who are able to make judgments with a comprehensive approach
  • Leaders who have management skills and who are able to accomplish their work in a methodical and efficient manner
  • Internationally-minded engineers who are willing to work anywhere in the world, and especially in East Asia
  • Researchers who have professional skills and knowledge (and who would be interested in continuing their research in the Ph.D. Program)
