The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) of Kyushu University was founded in 1911 as the Metallurgy Division of Kyushu Imperial University. The department has earned a reputation as one of the top MSE departments in the world, a reputation built on a solid history and tradition of leadership in the field. We have produced many of the best and brightest not only in Japan, but globally. Currently, MSE is in charge of education in the Materials Engineering course for undergraduates, and in the Materials Process Engineering and Materials Physics and Chemistry courses for graduate students. Meanwhile, in the research fields of MSE, we are leaders in advanced research and development in the field of structural metals (steel, aluminium, titanium, magnesium alloys, etc.) and various functional materials including semiconductors and ceramics.
