Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Hydrogen Energy Systems in the Graduate School of Engineering

The two mechanical engineering departments in the Graduate School of Engineering, i.e. the Department of Mechanical Engineering Science and the Department of Intelligent Machinery and Systems, will be reorganized into the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Hydrogen Energy Systems in April, 2010.

The Doctoral Course of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is a program that prepares students to assume a leading and innovative role to extend the boundaries of mechanical engineering in academic research and in the manufacturing industries. The students, through lectures and individual research projects, gain substantial expertise and analytical skills in one particular area, as well as a wide knowledge of the state of the art in the many areas of mechanical engineering. The International Doctoral Program (Global Course) in Mechanical Engineering provides an English educational environment for students from Japan and overseas who wish to work worldwide as leading, innovative researchers or engineers.

The Doctoral Course of the Department of Hydrogen Energy Systems is a full-English international educational program (Global Course) that prepares students to assume a role to lead, with the expertise of hydrogen energy and other sustainable energy technologies, the development of a safe, reliable low carbon society, in academic research and in the energy industries. The entry requirement is a Master's degree from a Japanese university or an equivalent qualification from an overseas university, in mechanical engineering or relevant science and engineering fields.

1. Qualifications for Application (Excerpt)

Applicants must meet one of the following conditions:

(1) Persons who hold a Master's degree or a Professional degree, or who will earn one by September 30, 2010.

(2) Persons who hold a degree equivalent to a Master's degree or a Professional degree from an accredited institution outside of Japan, or who will obtain one by September 30, 2010.

(3) Persons who are evaluated by an individual screening of requirements for admission to have an academic ability equal to or surpassing that of students who have graduated from the Master's or Professional Program of the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyushu University, and are at least 24 years of age.
Persons who intend to apply in accordance with qualification (3) to the Doctoral Course are required to submit to an individual evaluation of their scientific ability in relation to the Requirements for Admission before application.

3. Receipt Period for Application

From Thursday, May 27, 2010 to Thursday, June 3 until 5:00 pm
(This time period applies to all delivery methods, including postal mail.)

4. Individual Evaluation of Academic Requirements

Those who intend to apply in accordance with qualification for application (3) to the Doctoral Course are required to submit to an individual evaluation of their scientific ability in relation to the Requirements for Admission before application. In this case, the necessary documents 1), 2), 3), and 5) to 8) explained in Section 6 should be submitted by the applicant to the Academic Affairs Division, Administrative Office for the Faculty of Engineering etc, Kyushu University from Thursday, May 6, 2010 to Thursday, May 13, 2010.
The chairperson of the Department will inform the applicants of the results of the evaluation by mail by Thursday, May 27, 2010.
After the screening fee is accepted, the documents for application submitted by the successful applicants are automatically accepted.

5. Date and Time of Examination and Procedure of Screening

Date and place of examination
The examination will be held in mid-June, 2010. The applicants should obtain details about date, place and subjects of the examination from the professor who has accepted to supervise the applicant in the doctoral course after he/she passes the examination.

Written Examination or/and Oral Examination on Specialized Subject and Master's thesis. (or on a research progress report (should be submitted) for those who has not finished and will finish master's course before entering in this course.)

6. Application Procedures and Application Documents (Excerpt)

(1) Applicants should submit or send by postal mail the documents which correspond to any of the following to the Academic Affairs Division, Administrative Office for the Faculty of Engineering etc, Kyushu University.
If the applicants use postal mail for sending the application documents for admission, these should be sent by the EMS mail etc. "Application form for admission to Doctor Courses (the Graduate School of Engineering) General Examination (October)" should be written in red on the envelope.

(2) Application Documents (Excerpt)
1) Application form for admission, 2) Collation card, and Examination admission card, 3) A photocopy of the Applicant's Master's thesis, 4) Outline of research achievements (required for applicants who intend to apply under qualification (3)), 5) Research plan (required for applicants who intend to apply under qualification (3)), 6) Master's Degree Certificate (Diploma) issued by the university from which the applicant graduated most recently, 7) Academic Transcript issued by the university from which the applicant graduated most recently, 8) Application for Recognition of Academic Requirements (required only for those who intend to apply in accordance with qualification (3)), 9) A copy of Alien Registration Card (required for only international students who are currently residents in Japan, and 10) Transfer Receipt of Screening Fee.

(3) Screening Fee 30,000 yen (This is not required for applicants in the Master Course of the Graduate School of Kyushu University and those who are MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship Students.)

7. Announcement of the Result of Screening

he result will be posted on the public notice board (in Educational Affairs Section hall), Faculty of Engineering, Kyushu University at 9 am, Thursday, June 24, 2010.
The result will also be sent by mail to the applicants.
