1. Qualifications for Application

Applicant must be a graduate from a Japanese university or have academic ability equal or superior to that of a Japanese university graduate. A person will be deemed to have academic ability equal or superior to that of a Japanese university graduate, if he/she

(1) has completed 16 years of academic education outside of Japan or will complete it by September 30, 2010.

(2) has completed 15 years of formal education outside of Japan, and are recognized by our Graduate School to have received all the necessary credits with an excellent record.

(3) has been recognized by our Graduate School, based on an individual screening of requirements for admission , as having an academic ability equal to or surpassing that of a Japanese university graduate, and who will be at least 22 years of age by the entrance date.

(4) Aside from the above, those who have satisfied or will satisfy qualification for admission to a Japanese graduate school can be considered eligible for application.


Those who are staff in governmental offices and municipal offices of private companies, etc. or who hope for entrance by application qualification (2), (3) or (4) must consult Administrative Office (Section 10) before submitting the application form.

Applicants who intend to apply in accordance with qualification (2), (3) or (4) must take an individual evaluation of their scientific abilities in relation to the requirements for admission before application.

3. Individual Evaluation of Academic Requirements

Those who intend to apply in accordance with qualifications for application (2), (3), or (4) are required to submit to an individual evaluation of their scientific ability in relation to the Requirements for Admission before application. In this case, the necessary documents 1) to 5) and 7) explained in Section 6 should be submitted by the applicant to Academic Affairs Office of Academic Affairs Division, Administrative Office for the Faculty of Engineering etc, Kyushu University from Thursday, May 6 to Thursday, May 13, 2010.
The chairperson of the Department will inform the applicants of the results of the evaluation by mail by Thursday, May 27, 2010.
After the screening fee is accepted, the documents for application submitted by the successful applicants are automatically accepted.

4. Date and Place of Examinations

(1) Date of Examination          Thursday, June 17, 2010

(2) Place of Examination         Inquire to chairperson of department

(3) The examination will be postponed to Friday, May 18, 2010, in the case when it cannot be held under unexpected conditions due to e.g. typhoon.

5. Examination Subjects

(1) Engineering subjects
Department Subjects
Mechanical Engineering Mechanics of materials, Dynamics of Machinery, Thermal Engineering, Fluid Engineering
Hydrogen Energy Systems Take one of the following subject groups:
Group A: Mechanics of materials, Dynamics of Machinery, Thermal Engineering, Fluid Engineering
Group B: Mechanics of materials, "Dynamics of Machinery" OR "Mechanics and Materials Science", "Thermal Engineering" OR "Physical Chemistry", "Fluid Engineering" OR "Electrochemistry"
(2) Mathematics, (3) English, (4) Oral examination

6. Documents to be submitted

1) Application Form for Admission, 2) Collation Card/Examination Card, 3) Official Academic Transcript issued by the university from which you will graduate or graduated most recently, 4) Graduation Certificate or Statement that confirms expected graduation to be issued by the university from which you will graduate or graduated most recently, 5) *Any certificate about English skill (if the applicant has): e.g. a photocopy of score certificate of TOEIC or TOEFL, the transcript of results of IELTS, or the certifying statement of results of Cambridge ESOL Examination (FCE, CAE or CPE), 6) Screening fee payment receipt, and 7) Application for Recognition of Academic Requirements: applicants who intend to apply in accordance with qualification (2), (3), or (4) must submit.

MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology) Scholarship Students are able to apply using the documents they submitted through MEXT, instead of the prescribed documents (excluding the application form). Moreover, Research Students of the Graduate School of Engineering can use the documents previously submitted to the Academic Affairs Section, Faculty of Engineering.

7. Screening Fee  30,000 yen

Applicants are requested to transfer the screening fee to the following bank account with the bank transfer form. Please fill in your desired department, Code:2IE and your name in the box marked "name" after May 17, 2010. (Mext Scholarship Students are not required.)

8. Application Procedure

(1) Applicants should contact the chairperson of the Department with e-mail or facsimile before Thursday, May 13, 2010, informing that he/she intends to apply to the Department.

(2) Applicants should submit all the necessary documents listed in Section 6 to the Academic Affairs Division of the Faculty of Engineering etc. through the chairperson of the department of your first choice from Thursday, May 27 to Thursday, June 3, 2010.

(3) The documents for application should be sent by registered special delivery mail, or otherwise be brought in to the office described above. "Application form for admission to Master Course of the Graduate School of Engineering" should be written in red on the envelope.

9. Announcement of the Result

The result will be posted on the public notice board (in Educational Affairs Section hall), Faculty of Engineering, Kyushu University at 9 am, Thursday, June 24, 2010.
The result will also be sent by mail to the applicants.
