Admission Policy

Engineering is the study and investigation, based on fundamental scientific principles such as physics and chemistry, for the sustained development of human civilization. The Graduate School of Engineering aims to cultivate researchers, engineers, and educators who can contribute to the sustained development of human civilization through engineering.
Students who wish to study in the Graduate School are expected to have the following:
* A desire to undertake applied research based on fundamental knowledge
* A positive attitude towards learning new fields of study
* A steadfast ability to advance the pursuit of truth
* A strong sense of engineering ethics

Curricula Policy

The Graduate School of Engineering has been organized into the following advanced departments: Chemistry and Biochemistry, Materials Process Engineering, Materials Physics and Chemistry, Chemical Systems and Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering, Urban and Environmental Engineering, Maritime Engineering, Earth Resources Engineering, Applied Quantum Physics and Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Hydrogen Energy Systems, and Aeronautics and Astronautics. The aim of each department is the promotion of a deep expertise and creative ability concerning energy, materials, the environment, and systems, as well as the systematic training of researchers, engineers, and educators with high ethics and internationalism.
To achieve these aims, the Graduate School provides education on the following topics:
* Systematic and advanced specialized knowledge, ranging from fundamental principles to applications
* Broad knowledge concerning philosophy, ethics, politics, economics, international relations, and so on
* Development of a creative and well-rounded human nature, and the ability to search for and solve problems

The Graduate School of Engineering executes a special examination for individuals with research experience who are employed by government offices, companies, etc. at the time of application. This examination was established by the Graduate School to address the changing needs of society, such as the continuing education of working personnel to better understand recent technological innovations, and changes in the structure of industry.

  1. Qualifications for Application
    Applicants must meet one of the following conditions, and must have a position in service to the government, municipal offices, or companies.
    (1) Persons who hold a Master's degree or a Professional degree, or who will earn one by September 30, 2010 .
    (2) Persons who hold a degree equivalent to a Master's degree or a Professional degree from an accredited institution outside of Japan, or who will obtain one by September 30, 2010..
    (3) Persons who have completed their formal education by taking a correspondence course through a non-Japanese university while residing in Japan, and hold a degree equivalent to a Master's degree or a Professional degree, or who will obtain one by September 30, 2010.
    (4) Persons who have earned a degree from a graduate program at an educational institution in a country outside of Japan, which has been assessed by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan to be equivalent to a graduate program in the education system of Japan, or who will earn one by September 30, 2010.
    (5) Persons who have qualifications approved by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan
    1) Those who, after graduating from a university or finishing 16 years of academic education outside of Japan, have engaged for two or more years in research at a university or a research institute, and have been recognized to have an academic ability equivalent to Master's degree holders. This recognition is given by the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyushu University, on the
    basis of his/her previous research.
    2) Those who, after finishing 16 years of academic education through correspondence courses run by foreign educational establishments, have engaged for two or more years in research at a university or a research institute and have been recognized to have an academic ability equivalent to Master's degree holders. This recognition is given by the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyushu University, on the basis of his/her previous research.
    (6) Persons who are evaluated by an individual screening of requirements for admission to have an academic ability equal to or surpassing that of students who have graduated from the Master's or Professional Program of the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyushu University, and are at least 24 years of age.
    * Persons who intend to apply in accordance with qualifications (5) or (6) to the Doctoral Course are required to submit to an individual evaluation of their scientific ability in relation to the Requirements for Admission before application.

  2. Admission Capacity
    Each department will accept some number of students.

    * Explanation concerning the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Hydrogen Energy Systems in the Graduate School of Engineering
    The Departmental Group of Mechanical Engineering in the Graduate School of Engineering was reorganized into the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Hydrogen Energy Systems in April, 2010.
    The Department of Mechanical Engineering has setup two courses; the Mechanical Engineering Course and the International Doctoral Program (Global Course). The classes etc of the Global Course are lectured in English. All of the classes are lectured in full-English in the Department of Hydrogen Energy Systems.
    The Doctoral Course of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is an educational program that prepares students to attain an innovative researcher who has advanced expertise and superior capacity for the analysis, and an advanced professional engineer who acquired both advanced specialty and wide knowledge. The International Doctoral Program (Global Course) in Mechanical Engineering promotes the human resources who can work worldwide actively regardless of student's nationality.
    The Doctoral Course of the Department of Hydrogen Energy Systems is an educational program that prepares students to attain an international researcher who can work worldwide or an advanced professional engineer, and to lead the development of a safe and reliable low carbon society with the expertise of hydrogen energy and other sustainable energy technologies in academic research and in the energy industries.


  3. Application Procedures and Application Documents for Admission
    (1) Applicants must prepare the documents that correspond to any of the following, and submit them to the Academic Affairs Division, Administrative Office for the Faculty of Engineering etc., Kyushu University
    If the applicants use postal mail for sending the application documents for admission, these should be sent by the registered special delivery mail. "Application form for admission to Doctoral Course for working personnel (the Graduate School of Engineering)" should be written in red on the envelope.
    (2) Application Documents for Admission
    1) Application form for admission: Complete the application form prescribed by the Graduate School of Engineering.
    2) Collation card, and Examination admission card: Complete the form prescribed by the Graduate School of Engineering and paste a photograph.
    3) A photocopy of the applicant's Master's thesis: This is not required for applicants who intend to apply under qualifications (5) or (6).
    4) Outline of research achievements: Complete the form prescribed by the Graduate School of Engineering.
    5) Research plan: Describe a detailed research plan to be undertaken after entrance. (Any format is acceptable)
    6) Degree Certificate: To be issued by the university from which the applicant graduated most rece
    7) Academic Record: To be issued and tightly sealed by the university from which the applicant graduated most recently.
    8) A stamped envelope for the examination card:
    An envelope (235mm X 120mm in size) with the applicant's name, address and postal code.
    9) Application for Recognition of Academic Requirements: Fill out the provided form.
    This is only required for persons who intend to apply in accordance with qualification 5 or 6.
    10) A copy of Alien Registration Card: This is only required for International students who are currently residents in Japan.
    11) Screening Fee Payment Receipt 30,000yen

    Applicants are requested to transfer the screening fee to the following bank account with the bank transfer form. Please fill in your desired department, Code:3TE and your name in the box marked "name" after July 7 (Thu),

  4. Receipt Period for Application
    July 20 (Tue) 2010 - July 26 (Mon), 2010 until 5:00 pm
    (This time period applies to all delivery methods, including mail.)

  5. Individual Evaluation of Academic Requirements
    Those who intend to apply in accordance with qualifications 5 or 6 to the Doctoral Course are required to submit to an individual evaluation of their scientific ability in relation to the Requirements for Admission before application. In this case, the necessary documents: (1)(2)(4)~(10) should be submitted by the applicant to the Academic Affairs Division, Administrative Office for the Faculty of Engineering etc., Kyushu University July 5 (Mon), 2010 to July 9 (Fri), 2010.
    Notification of the evaluation results will be mailed to the Applicants from the Chairperson of the department by July 16 (Fri), 2010.
    Moreover, after the screening fee is accepted, the application documents for admission submitted by the successful applicants are automatically accepted.

    The examination will be postponed to Tuesday, August 31, 2010, in the case when it cannot be held under unexpected conditions due to e.g. typhoon.

  7. Announcement of the Result
    On September 10 (Fri), 2010, the result will be posted on the public notice board in the hall of the Academic Affairs Division, Administrative Office for Faculty of Engineering etc., Kyushu University.
    The result will also be sent by mail to the successful applicants.
    There will be no response to inquiries by telephone concerning the result.

  8. Date of Entrance
    October 1st, 2010

  9. Enrollment Procedures
    The successful applicants should complete the enrollment procedure by the following date after receiving the necessary documents around September 10 (Fri), 2010.
    1 Registration period : From September 13 (Mon) 2010 to September 22 (Wed) 2010.
    2 Payments
    1) Admission fee : 282,000 yen (Expected)
    Applicants from the Master Course of the Graduate School of Kyushu University are exempt from the admission fee.
    2) Tuition fee : 267,900 yen for the fall semester (from October 1, 2010 to March 31, 2010).
    The revised tuition will be applied to enrolled students after the revision becomes effective.

  10. Other
    1 No application documents will be returned to the Applicant after being received. Furthermore, the screening fee will not be refunded.
    2 If the examination card is not received, notify the information desk listed in Section XI before the examination date.
    3 Any changes to the entrance exam schedule will be posted on the following web site. All applicants are encouraged to confirm the exam schedule.
