2011 Applicant Guidelines for Master's Programs (First Stage, Master Courses) of the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyushu University

Admission Policy

Engineering is the study that permanently investigates the sustained development of the human race based on the principle and laws such as physics and chemistry in the fundamental field of science. In the Graduate School of Engineering, our aim is to bring out the researcher, the engineer, and the educationalist who will contribute to the sustained development of the human race through engineering.
The following matters are expected of a student who aims to study in our graduate school.

* Students who have the will to wrestle with applied research based on fundamental knowledge
* Positive students who will make new changes in the field.
* Students who can push forward to search for truth with fortitude.
* Students who will have the ethics as an engineer.

Curricula Policy

Graduate School of Engineering has been organized into the following advanced departments, namely: Chemistry and Biochemistry, Materials Process Engineering, Materials Physics and Chemistry, Chemical Systems and Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering, Urban and Environmental Engineering, Maritime Engineering, Earth Resources Engineering, Applied Quantum Physics and Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Hydrogen Energy Systems, and Aeronautics and Astronautics. The aim of each department is to educate and promote deep as well as search and create concerning energy, materials, the environment, and systems through an educational research, and to systematically train the researcher, engineer, and the educator who is involved in engineering with high ethics and internationalism.

To achieve these aims, we execute the following educational programs.
* Systematized education of advanced expertise over application from foundation
* Education of wide knowledge concerning philosophy, ethics, politics, economy, and international relations, and so on.
* Education to develop well-rounded human nature, ability of searching and solving for subjects, as well as creativity

  1. Qualifications for Application
    Applicants must meet one of the following conditions:
    (1) Persons who have completed 16 years of academic education in foreign countries or will complete it by March 31, 2011.
    (2) Persons who have completed 16 years of their formal education nominally in foreign countries by taking correspondence subjects in Japan or will complete by March 31, 2011.
    (3) Persons who have successfully completed 16 years of Undergraduate School at an educational institution in a foreign country, which is deemed in Japan to have a similar level of education, and designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology or will complete by March 31, 2011.
    (4) Persons who have qualifications approved by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan
    (5) Persons who have been recognized by our Graduate School, based on an individual screening of requirements for admission of our Graduate School, as having an academic ability equal to or surpassing students who have graduated from a university, and who will be 22 years of age by the entrance date.
    (6) Persons who have completed 15 years of formal education in foreign countries, and are recognized to have received all the necessary credits with an excellent record by our Graduate School.
    (7) Persons who have completed 15 years of their formal education nominally in foreign countries by taking correspondence subjects in Japan, and are recognized to have received all the necessary credits with an excellent record by our Graduate School.
    (8) Persons who have successfully completed 15 years of Undergraduate School at an educational institution in a foreign country, which is assessed in Japan to have a similar level of education, and designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and are recognized to have received all the necessary credits with an excellent record by our Graduate School.

    (Notes concerning application)
    Persons who are staff belonging to government and municipal offices of the companies, etc. or who hope for an entrance by application qualification (5), (6), (7), or (8) must consult the Information desk (Section 13) before submitting the application form.

    * Applicants who intend to apply in accordance with qualification (5) - (8) must take an individual evaluation of their scientific abilities in relation to the requirements for admission before making an application.

    (Notes)
    Applicants who wish to enter a department marked ◊ may apply for Department of Systems Life Sciences (Field of Biotechnology) of the Graduate School of Systems Life Sciences (Exam. in autumn) simultaneously. In that case, the applicant should separately submit the copy of the score sheet of TOEIC or TOEFL to the office of the Graduate School of Systems Life Sciences.
    Furthermore the oral examination of Department of Systems Life Sciences for examinees who applied to both graduate schools is executed at the same day: September 24th of the Entrance Examination in Autumn of the Graduate School of Systems Life Sciences. The details are guided in the office of the Graduate School of Systems Life Sciences (e-mail: sls-jimu@sls.kyushu-u.ac.jp).
    * The recruitment number of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Hydrogen Energy Systems contains the recruitment number of the International Master's Program (separately recruitment before this recruitment).

  3. Documents to be submitted
    (1)Application form for admission:Complete the form prescribed by our Graduate School
    (2)Collation card, and Examination admission card:Complete the form prescribed by our Graduate School and passport-grade photograph must be attached.
    (3)Registration of Optional Subject: Examinees who apply to the Departmental Group of Materials Science Engineering, Departmental Group of Earth Resources, Marine and Civil Engineering (except the Department of Earth Resources Engineering), Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Hydrogen Energy Systems must submit.
    (4)Official Academic Transcript:To be issued by the university from which you will graduate or graduated most recently.
    (5)Graduation Certificate or Statement that confirms expected graduation:To be issued by the university from which you will graduate or graduated most recently.
    (6)Synthesized English qualifying examination score certificate:The score certificate of TOEIC or TOEFL. (Copy is accepted. Refer (Attached sheet)[Points of concern].)
    (7)A stamped envelope for the examination card
    The envelope (235mm X 120mm in size) with the applicant's name, address and ZIP code. (Students registered in the Masters Course of Graduate School of Engineering, Kyushu University are exempted.)
    (8)Screening fee 30,000 yen
    (9)Application for Recognition of Academic Requirements : Applicants who intend to apply in accordance with (5) - (8) must submit. Fill out the provided form.
    (10)Certificate of Alien Registration.
    Only International students who are currently residents in Japan must submit.
    (11)Certificate of Japanese ability Research students of this Graduate School are exempted.

  4. Screening Fee 30,000yen

  5. Synthesized English qualifying examination score certificate (TOEIC, TOEFL)
    (1)TOEIC or TOEFL might be used for English for exam subjects of each department. Refer Section 10: Examination Subjects and (Attached sheet)[Points of concern].)
    (2)Score Certificate
    Persons who have taken English qualifying examinations such as TOEIC or TOEFL must submit their score certificates (Copy). Furthermore the applicants (examinees) should bring their certificate (original) on the very day of the examination.

  6. Application Period
    Applications are accepted between July 1 (Thu), 2010 and July 9 (Fri), 2010 at 5 p.m.
    (Application documents sent by mail must be RECEIVED by July 9 (Fri) at 5 p.m.)

  7. Individual Evaluation of Academic Requirements
    Persons who intend to apply in accordance with qualifications (5) - (8) for the Master Course are required to submit to an individual evaluation of their scientific ability in relation to the Requirements for Admission before application. In this case, the necessary documents (1) - (7) and (9) - (11) explained in section 3 should be submitted by the applicant to the Academic Academic Affairs Division, Administrative Office of the Faculty of Engineering etc, Kyushu University from June 14 (Mon), 2010 to June 18 (Fri), 2010 by noon.
    Announcement of the results of the evaluation: Applicants will be contacted by mail from the Chairperson of the department by July 1 (Thu), 2010.
    Moreover, after the screening fee is accepted, the documents of application form for admission submitted by successful applicants are automatically accepted.

    *6 The selection method of Mechanical Engineering major group is as follows
    1) The successful examinees in Group A are decided the belonging department according to the research field (page 20 assigned to him/her.
    2) The successful examinees in Group B are arranged in the Department of Hydrogen Energy Systems.
    3) The main content of each subject of examination is shown in Internet web site.

  11. Announcement of the Result
    On August 27 (Fri), 2010, the results will be posted on the public notice board (in Educational Affairs Section hall), Faculty of Engineering., Kyushu University.
    The results will also be sent by mail to the successful applicants.
    There will be response to inquiries by telephone concerning the results at all.

    April 1st , 2011

  13. Payments on Enrollment Procedures
    Admission fee : 282,000 yen
    Tuition fee: 267,900 yen for the one semester
    Annual total: 535,800 yen
    (Notes) If the admission fee and tuition fee are revised, the new amounts of these fees are applied to all students.

  14. Notes
    (1) Requests for information and application forms should be sent to the address shown in Section 8 through the person who is expected to be a supervisor. A self-addressed envelope, (332mmX240mm) should be sent with the request. "Application form for Masters Course" should be written clearly in red on the front of the envelope
    (2) Regardless of any reasons, it is not admitted that any or all documents are replaced and the Screening fee is returned after the application form is accepted.
    (3) Persons who didn't receive the examination card may inquire of the Academic Affairs Division, Administrative Office for the Faculty of Engineering etc. by the very date of the examination.

[Points of concern on how to use score of TOEIC or TOEFL in the entrance examination]

♦Common matter of all departments

  • Score of IP test is not admitted on TOEIC or TOEFL.
  • Submit the score certificate (copy) of TOEIC or TOEFL at application. Moreover, bring the score certificate (original) on the very day of the examination. Furthermore, applicants may bring the newer score certificate (original) than the time of application. It is necessary that the score certificate has a photograph.
  • The validity term of the score certificate of TOEIC and TOEFL is admitted to be two years prior from the examination day.

Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Hydrogen Energy Systems

The Mechanical Engineering Major Group (Department of Mechanical Engineering Science and Department of Intelligent Machinery and Systems before 2009) in the Graduate School of Engineering of Kyushu University was recognized into the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Hydrogen Energy Systems in April, 2010. Each Department has two courses; Department of Mechanical Engineering (Mechanical Engineering Course and Global Course) and Department of Hydrogen Systems (Hydrogen Systems Course and Global Course). All of the classes are lectured in full-English in the Global Course.
Students in the master's course of the Department of Mechanical Engineering can receive the excellent education that aims to become the leading engineers or the researchers who acquire wide and substantial expertise and the comprehensive skills in the field of mechanical engineering.

Admission Policy
Department of Mechanical Engineering seeks applicants with a wide fundamental knowledge in the field of mechanical engineering and excellence in English and Mathematics. Department of Hydrogen Energy Systems widely recruits applicants who completed the bachelor program in mechanical engineering or relevant fields and alumnus from other than the field of mechanical engineering also. The latter students can receive the education for acquirement of the basic knowledge of mechanical engineering after the entrance.

Curriculum Policy
The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers called 'advanced expertise subjects' to master fundamental knowledge ranging from elemental technologies to system technologies, and subjects called 'advanced specific subjects' to master more specific specialized knowledge. Furthermore, students will improve their communication skills through subjects called 'ability development subjects' and ultimately acquire various comprehensive skills by writing their dissertation.
The Department of Hydrogen Energy Systems also similarly offers 'advanced expertise subjects' , 'advanced specific subjects', 'various comprehensive subjects', and subjects for international students.
Students will acquire the technology covered broad areas and the fundamental knowledge of sciences and engineering by 'advanced expertise subjects' and 'advanced specific subjects' consist of the following subjects: the basic hydrogen, materials and design, thermofluid, mechanical engineering, advanced specific technology. Furthermore, the fundamental mechanical engineering subject is offered for the students who graduated from other than the field of mechanical engineering.

After Completion of the Program
After completion of the program, the majority of graduates become advanced professionals working in private companies in manufacturing industries, and also become researchers or academic staff in private companies, governmental research institutions, and universities in the fields of mechanical engineering and energy, at home and abroad.
